Bimatoprost

Prostaglandin analog for eyelash growth.

What it is

Bimatoprost (Latisse) is a synthetic prostaglandin analog originally developed for glaucoma treatment (as Lumigan eye drops) and later approved by the FDA in 2008 for cosmetic eyelash enhancement. It is technically not a peptide — it is a prostaglandin analog — but is sometimes grouped with peptide-class cosmetic agents in marketing contexts.

Mechanism of action

Prostaglandin F2α analog activity, which influences hair follicle biology to extend the anagen growth phase and increase eyelash length, thickness, and pigmentation.

Approved indications

FDA-approved for treatment of hypotrichosis (inadequate or insufficient eyelashes) and for glaucoma (different formulation).

Why this is out of scope at The Tide

Latisse is a cosmetic eyelash product appropriately prescribed through dermatology, aesthetic medicine, or ophthalmology depending on the indication. The Tide does not provide cosmetic eyelash treatments. Bimatoprost has potential ocular side effects (iris pigmentation changes, eyelid pigmentation, possible worsening of certain ocular conditions) that are best managed by providers with relevant ocular and aesthetic expertise.
