Glucagon
Pancreatic peptide hormone for severe hypoglycemia.
What it is
Glucagon (GlucaGen, Baqsimi nasal, Gvoke prefilled syringe/auto-injector) is the endogenous 29-amino-acid pancreatic hormone produced by pancreatic alpha cells. Synthetic and recombinant glucagon preparations are FDA-approved for treatment of severe hypoglycemia in patients with diabetes and as a diagnostic agent for certain endocrine conditions.
Mechanism of action
Glucagon receptor activation in liver promotes glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis, raising blood glucose. The effect is rapid (minutes after administration) and is the basis for emergency hypoglycemia rescue.
Approved indications
- Severe hypoglycemia rescue in diabetes
- Diagnostic use for certain endocrine evaluations
- Smooth muscle relaxation in some radiologic procedures
Why this is out of scope at The Tide
Glucagon for hypoglycemia rescue is prescribed by primary care or endocrinology as part of comprehensive diabetes care. Patients with diabetes who require glucagon rescue should obtain it through their diabetes care provider. The Tide does not provide diabetes management.
The newer formulations (Baqsimi nasal, Gvoke auto-injector) provide easier administration than traditional injection kits and are typically prescribed alongside other diabetes care.
