Macimorelin
Oral ghrelin agonist for GH deficiency diagnosis.
What it is
Macimorelin (Macrilen) is an oral ghrelin receptor agonist FDA-approved in 2017 for diagnostic evaluation of adult growth hormone deficiency. It provides a more convenient alternative to traditional GH stimulation tests (insulin tolerance test, glucagon stimulation test).
Mechanism of action
Oral ghrelin receptor agonism produces a robust GH release in patients with intact GH-axis function but blunted response in patients with GH deficiency. The differential response provides diagnostic information.
Approved indications
Diagnostic evaluation of adult growth hormone deficiency. Single-dose diagnostic use only.
Why this is out of scope at The Tide
Diagnostic medication for evaluation of adult GH deficiency, appropriately used by endocrinology in the workup of suspected GH deficiency. The Tide does not perform formal GH deficiency diagnostic testing — patients with suspected pituitary disorders are referred to endocrinology.
