Lab Work Before Peptides: What We Order and Why
A walkthrough of the baseline panel we order before starting peptide therapy. What each test tells us, what we do with the results, and why we never skip this step.
Read articleComprehensive lab panels and genetic testing with clinical interpretation. Beyond standard primary care — designed for optimization rather than just screening.

Standard primary care lab work is built around screening — looking for disease, finding the obvious abnormality, ruling out concerning findings. It is not designed to optimize. The metabolic panel that tells you your fasting glucose is “normal” at 99 mg/dL won’t tell you whether your insulin resistance is creeping upward. The TSH that says your thyroid is “in range” at 4.2 won’t catch the early hypothyroidism that’s affecting your energy. The total cholesterol that “looks fine” tells you almost nothing about your actual cardiovascular risk.
The Tide offers advanced lab work and genetic testing as structured clinical services for patients who want a deeper picture of their biology. This is for patients who want to optimize, not just to screen — and who want a clinician who can interpret the results in clinical context rather than just sending a PDF.
You may be an appropriate candidate if:
You may not be the right fit if you are looking for direct-to-consumer lab tests without clinical interpretation, if you want lab work as a substitute for medical care for diagnosed conditions, or if specific hereditary cancer syndrome workup is needed (which requires genetic counseling that we don’t provide).
Comprehensive lab panels. Beyond standard primary care labs, we offer:
Genetic testing services. We offer:
For complex hereditary cancer syndrome workup, we refer to genetic counselors with specific expertise in that area.
Clinical interpretation. The most important part of advanced lab work isn’t the numbers — it’s what they mean for you. We review every result with you in clinical context: what’s optimal vs. what’s “in range,” what to act on, what to monitor, and what specific interventions follow from specific findings. This is the part most direct-to-consumer lab services miss entirely.
Tracking over time. Single labs are snapshots. Trends matter more. We help you build a longitudinal picture of your biology and track how interventions are actually affecting the numbers that matter.
Initial advanced lab work typically involves a fasting blood draw covering 30 to 60 markers depending on the panel selected. Genetic testing involves a single sample (usually saliva or blood). Results return within 1 to 3 weeks depending on the testing.
The follow-up visit is where the value lives. Forty-five minutes reviewing results, identifying actionable findings, prioritizing what to address first, and setting up tracking for what to recheck over time. Most patients leave their first advanced lab review with 3 to 5 specific things to address — usually a mix of lifestyle interventions, supplement adjustments, and selected pharmacological tools.
We do not order tests for the sake of ordering tests. We do not promise that lab data alone produces health — interpretation and action matter more than data. We do not pretend that every “out of optimal range” finding requires intervention. We do not use lab results as a sales tool for unnecessary supplements or treatments. We do not provide genetic counseling for hereditary cancer syndromes — that is a specialized service we refer to.
Advanced lab work is cash-pay in most cases (some labs are insurance-covered depending on your plan and the specific test). Pricing varies substantially based on which panels are ordered. Genetic testing has its own pricing structure. Our consultation and review services are billed separately from the lab costs themselves.
Many advanced lab services in Houston are direct-to-consumer — you order tests online, get a PDF of results, and have no clinical context. Others are concierge medicine practices with high membership fees and lots of testing but limited specific expertise. The Tide offers advanced lab work as part of a focused metabolic, hormonal, and longevity practice. We know what we’re looking at because we work with these markers daily. Our clinic at 6909 Grand Boulevard is adjacent to the Texas Medical Center.
If you have searched for “advanced lab testing Houston,” “comprehensive blood work Houston,” “genetic testing clinic Houston,” or related terms, and you want clinical depth alongside the data, this is the right place to start.
Primary care typically orders standard screening panels designed to find disease, not to optimize. We order more comprehensive panels and interpret them in the context of optimization rather than just screening. The same fasting glucose result tells different stories in different contexts — we help interpret yours.
For complex hereditary cancer concerns (BRCA, Lynch syndrome, etc.), we refer to genetic counselors with specific expertise. For pharmacogenomic and broader genetic risk panels, we offer these directly.
Initial baseline panel, then targeted follow-up at 3 to 6 months when starting a new intervention, then annually for stable tracking. We don’t recommend high-frequency lab work without a specific reason — it adds cost without much additional information.
Many patients’ results show a mix of clearly optimal markers and markers that are “within range” but suboptimal. We discuss what’s worth addressing and what to monitor. Not every imperfect marker requires intervention.
Some lab tests may be covered by insurance depending on your plan and how the test is ordered. Genetic testing varies widely. Our consultation services are typically cash-pay. We can help you understand what may be covered.
The data isn’t the value — the interpretation is. We don’t order tests we won’t review with you. If you want lab data without clinical interpretation, direct-to-consumer services exist for that purpose.
Book a consultation. We’ll discuss what you want to learn from lab work, decide which panels make sense for your situation, order them, and schedule a follow-up to review results in clinical context.
