Corticotropin
Adrenocorticotropic hormone for infantile spasms and MS relapse.
What it is
Corticotropin (H.P. Acthar Gel) is a purified preparation of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and other related peptides. It is FDA-approved for several specific indications including infantile spasms, multiple sclerosis exacerbations, certain rheumatic disorders, and other specialty uses.
Mechanism of action
ACTH stimulates adrenal cortex production of cortisol, aldosterone, and androgens. The clinical effects derive primarily from elevated endogenous cortisol but may include direct effects of ACTH on melanocortin receptors in some target tissues.
Approved indications
- Infantile spasms
- Multiple sclerosis exacerbations
- Specific rheumatic, dermatologic, and renal conditions
- Selected ophthalmic conditions
Why this is out of scope at The Tide
Acthar Gel is used for specific specialty conditions appropriately managed by neurology (infantile spasms, MS), rheumatology, nephrology, or other specialty depending on indication. The Tide does not provide care for these complex conditions. Acthar Gel is also notably expensive and has been the subject of significant pricing controversy.
